SEAN FERNANDEZ

2nd Degree Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Professor Sean Fernandez’s journey into the art of Jiu-Jitsu is a testament to his lifelong dedication to martial arts.

From a young age, he immersed himself in the world of martial arts, commencing with a mixed Karate style that ultimately earned him a 2nd-degree black belt. As a Karate instructor, he discovered his love for teaching and the profound impact martial arts can have.

However, it was his transition to Jiu-Jitsu in 2002 that marked a pivotal moment. Guided by professor Rodrigo Teixeira, he embarked on a transformative path, progressing from a Jiu-Jitsu white belt to a brown belt.

In 2009, Sean embarked on an inspiring journey to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he lived and had the unique opportunity to train with the legendary Rolker Gracie at the iconic Gracie Humaita Academy headquarters. Returning to the United States, he continued his martial arts journey under the mentorship of IBJJF Hall of Fame brothers, Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, ultimately achieving black belt in 2014.

Today, Professor Sean Fernandez finds joy in sharing his extensive knowledge and expertise, both as an instructor and a competitor, at Higher Ground BJJ.

It’s a great honor to teach Jiu-Jitsu and see how it helps students on and off the mats.
